What is the benefit of cleaning/running powerheads in a vinegar and water? Also, is there a suggested rinsing cycle to remove the vinegar odor/residue from the powerhead before placing back into your tank?

Vinegar is used to clean the gunk off the power heads. And. Always just rinsed them thouroughly.

Yes, run the power head over night in straight vinegar and the hair algae will come off. rinse it in the sink then put it back in the tank.
