It is kind of funny, but I hate to pay $25 for a jar of $2 chemicals. That's an expensive label.

Just goes to show that ignorance is way more expensive that knowledge. You can sell cheap stuff to people who don't have the right info and the ones in-the-know save can save a small fortune. I know what side of the coin I hope to be on.

It will remove particulate matter (and probably clog pretty quickly) but won't do anything but that.

It would turn into nitrifying bio-media if it isn't cleaned regularly. It may be useful as a temporary polishing filter after a messy water change or when doing something like adding more sand. Other than for that I wouldn't recommend using it for mechanical filtration. It won't be as easy to service and clean as a simple sock.
