Better to point PH up or down?

It never really crossed my mind before... I currently have the PH's stream crossing in a X, but would it be better to point them up towards the surface or down towards the ground?

Upwards to make debris rise and also to cause surface agitation.

Cool. Up until now, I've had them pointing straight.

Actually you could have 2 pointing upwards and 2 straight across. I just realised that's what I have.

I can't have any pointing downwards because it stirs up the sand too much.

How do you get your ph to stay pointing up?

I have Maxi Jets and they come with flaps (flow directors) attached to the water output. They can be turned up, down and around.
