Black Longspine Urchin

Does the black longspine urchin lose his spikes for any reason? I looked at my urchin today and he has lost all of his longer spikes...he still has all of his shorter spikes and is moving around and eating. Nothing else in the tank seems to be ill. his remaining spikes are about an inch to an inch and a half and he has plenty.

Thanks! i havent seen him since i posted this so i believe he is a goner I hvaent found a body though and he does like to hide during the day so ill still keep an eye out

My brother had one for awhile and we would notice his spines would break from time to time, especially if he was bothered. I never saw them just fall out though.
