Any of you guys with big reef aquariums use this as a routine every month?

On my planted tank once a month I do that. Plants grow at night so I usually get a lot of growth during these days.

Not sure if that applies to coral too.

My friend owns an online coral sales company and regularly turns his lights off for the weekend. He buys wild caught coral which are collected during rainy season. He has 30 1000w mh and does it to save money but his coral always look amazing. He does lights out for Saturday and Sunday once a month.

I cant say U've ever tried that on my big tanks, but then again I have had no algae issues so I havent seen the need.
:)

Good stuff guys & Bige nice to know. Algae is one reason they do the 3 day blackout but not a cure for it like we know. Others do it and say their water is crystal clear when the light comes back on & corals look better. If you think about it in the ocean when there is a stormy day or hurricane our reefs don't get light for a few days so it's not something out of the normal.
