about 2.5 months ago i went to Disney and bought a small basket with some cool looking shells in it I was wandering if i could put them in a reef aquarium when i get one in a month or two.
I'd boil them first. It'll work, though it won't have the surface area that rock does for the beneficial bacteria growth. You'll still need rock or you'll struggle to keep ammonia levels down.
I'm going to have live rock anyway but i have like 50 shells and they all look cool I have 3 or 4 conk shells (about 2 species) and some snail, hermit crab, and scallop shells (or clam not sure)
Just make sure you stick to small hermits. Biggest problem I've had with nice bigger shells is hermits taking them as theirs and knocking all my corals around. I've since rehomed all my large hermits. But it was a serious pain in the tush while it was going on.
