Buying a starfish at the LFS

I see starfish at the LFS all the time, and they are usually fused to the aquarium glass or a piece of LR. I was wondering: if I buy one of them, how do they get the starfish to let go without hurting it?

Their legs are equipped with little suction cups. I doesn't hurt them to remove them. As long as it is done gently.

If the starfish doesn't react quickly to being touched. Pass it by and select another one. When I got mine, he wrapped a leg around the hand that was in the tank (looking for food and investigating). Or scurrying in the other direction shows an alert starfish.
