Hi I came accross a SW tank for sale and the owner threw in the live sand for free. he sold the tank because he was upgrading. he said the sand had been sitting in SW for about 6 months. I was wondering if I should use that sand or but new sand i dont want to buy the new sand because it going to cost me about $ 100 and i dont feel like paying that but if can get away with the old sand he gave me i would much rather do that. let me know what you think thanks

What is your time worth? You can rinse and reuse the old sand but it will take you some time to do so.

why chance it, you have no idea what is in it, save a scoop for seeding, an ammonia spike will wipe out a lot more than $100 worth of livestock

There's nothing in it worth seeding with. I would rinse it thoroughly and use it. you can rinse out any dead/rotting matter and there will be no spike.
