I havent used any rocks from outside, but I did use lace rock from my freshwater tanks. I rinsed it really well and put it in with some live rock and all has been good.

In general I've read that it's just not a good idea. Rock is porous - so you never know what could leech out of it over time. Plus you don't know what the rock composition is - could have undesirable metals or other properties.

I agree with the above. Best not to risk it, you can get base rock for about $2 a lb so it is cheap enough not to have to take the risk.

Check out ReefCleaners.org | Clean Up Crews and Macro Algae OR The Reef Rock Store

I have a mix of many different saltwater fish amongst my tanks, but I love my Tangs most of all.

There are quarried rocks offered that are great for reef tanks, but just picking up land rocks without knowing their composition risks introducing metals and all sorts of other bad things a small closed system can't tolerate.
