Can you have too much lighting?

I'm considering a 2x250W halide setup for a 55 gal tank. Could this be too much light?

Depends on what you want in there. Leather corals certainly wouldn't be happy.

the 250 bulb is pretty much the best all around bulb. Leathers wil be fine under them as will SPS and clams. The one thing that may not like them to much is mushrooms

This is TWO 250W in a 55g. Just want to make sure it's not overkill.

I wouldn't put leather corals under 500w of MH light in a 55g, but that's me.

If your hanging your MH you can always raise them if they are too intense for your corals.
