Canister Filter Media?

Is there a filter medium that assists with the control of Nitrates? I'm not going to be able to do a sump for my 75 gallon and wondered if there were any other options to control this without spending a fortune on live rock.

live rock rubble tends to be good.. in my canister i have live rock rubble, ceramic noodles, bio balls and phosphate filter pads.. seems to do the job
