I want to upgrade to MH lighting on my 55gal. The problem is I only have 5" from top of tank to top of inside face of canopy. Can I install a MH/PC retro in this little space? With this little space between lights and water, how do most people go about protecting the lights from the water? I know a glass/plastic shield is used, but is it placed directly on top of the tank or is there a better way of doing this? I want to be able to easily access my tank without having to remove a 4' sheet of glass everytime I need to maintance the tank.

Coralife MH system would work, but I would prefer to not have that bulky thing inside the canopy and saving money on a DIY project is also a plus :D

BTW, the canopy is a flip open on top.

scrap the mh idea and go get some tek t5 retros the produce very little heat and will be just fine 4-5 " above the water. Check out reef centeral about tanks with t5 lights, people keep sps/clams, basically anything.
