Setting up 10 gallon nano tank, but that doesn't matter to the question as much do I really need carbon? I have heard more no's then yes's?

You don't need to run anything in your tank in theory. The only reason to run carbon, gfo, or whatever product is to address something that is going on in your system.
One thing I can say about running activated carbon on a tank is that the water is always crystal clear. That is something it is hard not to enjoy.
