carbon filter

I am currently rinsing my filter once a week and changing it every 2 weeks. I dont care for the filter(pad) because it seems to hol too much junk. is there something else I could put the carbon in? I have a little whisper HOB filter for a 5-15 g tank? Also I have heard of the polyfilters what are they? and how do they work?

I never thought about that. Is there a rule of thumb (how much per gallon?)
Thanx

" 3 tablespoons of carbon for each 50 Gallons of water." I found a great site that talks about carbon..check it out. http://www.algone.com/activated_carbon.htm
