carbon filter

I am currently rinsing my filter once a week and changing it every 2 weeks. I dont care for the filter(pad) because it seems to hol too much junk. is there something else I could put the carbon in? I have a little whisper HOB filter for a 5-15 g tank? Also I have heard of the polyfilters what are they? and how do they work?

I use old socks to house my carbon. HAHA, its been working great for me.

I never thought about that. Is there a rule of thumb (how much per gallon?)
