I need to remove my spiny black urchin, its spines are 3" - 4" long. This is the first need I've had for any gloves. Can I just pick up a pair at the super market from the cleaning section? Obviously I want to make sure there isn't any chemicals or anything.

You can use a plastic container and a credit card to flip it into the container. I would be wary of most of the gloves sold in the supermarket.

Another way of moving them is getting some tongs and rubber banding some sponges to the tong ends to pick them up. Saw the guys at one of my LFS use this method and it works fine.
