Is there such a thing as too much cheato in your sump? When do you know you need to take some out? Just curious.

How ever much you want is the easy answer to your question. It is used for nitrogen export so as you trim it and throw it out you are also throwing out the bad stuff in the tank.

Keith, cheato tends to grow in a compact ball. The only reason to trim it is so that the ball does not get so dense that it prevents light from reaching all of the cheato. The part that does not get any light will turn brown and die. So you would want the algae to tumble so all gets some light. I hope that helps.

Cheato is the safe alternative. Alot of us use some of the calerpa`s but they come with some risk. Need 24/7 lighting and constant pruning. Better nutrient exporter but as I said with some risk.
