My substrate is sand based I was wondering what is the best way to clean the debris off the top. I thought that you could use one of the tub cleaners, but would the sand be sucked up with the debris? Thanks for all the help

Some sand gets sucked up but at least it gets it clean. Or you can buy sand cleaner critters :D

The Llynasa (sp?) snails that I have in my tank now are excellent sand sifters. In fact, it's all they do all day. When you feed, out they come.

If you want, you can use a regualr gravel vaccum without alot of sand loss.

I just use the syphon but I take the big thing off and go direct tube about 1/2 over sand. Some sand gets sucked up but no noticible difference after about 8 months of doing it. I have snails and things but they will never get all the detritus that comes from things in LR and fish.

I don't ever clean my sand. I have a large hermit crab that takes care of it for me. Just get a cleaning crew and they will take care of it for you.
