Coral Query - Leathers

I have a leather coral in my setup, its bright orange and when i do my weekly maintenance i am having to carefully remove what seems to be a blackish substance from the coral with my hands.. i am unsure if this is algae or not.. if the coral is dying would i be able to remove the dead tissue with my hand.. it looks 100%.. do leather corals have problems with algae.. im unsure.. the leather is in the shape of a fan..

any help would be great?

CHEERS!

This black stuff, does it look like a second skin over the coral?
Mine do this and it is shedding. It first looks like a protective covering all over, then as water movement from my Power Heads gets near the coral, this skin rolls into a long stringy type black colored substance. If you grab it with your fingers, it's slimy.
Anyways, don't use your hand/fingers to remove it with. Use a turkey baster and blast some of your water across it! Don't touch your corals if you don't have to.
