crab...mmm tasty snack!

Well, I think my trigger had a tasty snack last night, in the name of a red legged crab. He was out of his shell in shreds. Only one culprit could've done that and he's not talking. I was afraid this might happen, oh well, the joys of owning a trigger.

I was always under the impression that Niger Tiggers are the least aggresive. I have a Bursa and he doesn't really bother anything (yet).

Yeah but guess what, the crab is back from the dead!! he's back in his shell somehow, don't ask me how, must have been another hermit crab or something...weird!

The first time one of my crabs molted it freaked me out, it sure looked dead!

Good point, MT79! it's funny but I never noticed any of my hermits molt, now that you mention it! I have had true crabs and a lobster that both molted at regular intervals, but never a hermit that I noticed....

What is molting? Do they 'shed' their skin or something? It looked like the claws were intact, that's why I thought it was the actual crab at first.

they shed there outer shell as they grow, they may hide untill it hardens, i dont think hermits molt, but search for a new shell instead

Actually they do molt, the anterior end is just a softer shell.

I can tell you for a fact that hermit crabs do molt!! and they change shells.. also dont put shrimp in the tank they become dinner. Hope that helps
