forgive me for sounding dumb .
but what do you mean about a tank crashing??
not phisically i know (crash,boom)
is it when the hydrogen sulfide layers give off the gas and kill every thing?
thanks

"Crash" is a generic term for having a total tank wipe out, generally refers to the filtration "crashing" and killing the tank but can refer to other causes as well.

Of the 3 crashes I've personally been aware of (luckily, neither was my tank), one appeared to be a hydrogen sulfide release and the others deadly ammonia spikes. There were likely other root causes, but both seemed to originate from the all too common "vacation crash syndrome." Well meaning friends stirred up a DSB in the first case while the owner was on vacation. In the second, the tank sitter allowed her 2 little girls to feed Nemo over and over and over. In the last, the tank sitter wanted to surprise the owner of a high bio-load tank with 3 new fish when he returned and instead he was met with 11 dead ones in a 55, yes, 11. I'll bet there are other causes people will ID.
