I have experimented with different substrates among my 5 tanks. My seahorse tank is strictly CC and I do not have elevated levels of anything in there. By no means is your tank doomed.

what kind of equip do you have running on that CC tank Hara? I'm battling high nitrates and have been, so far, placing blame on the CC. what kind of regular maintenance do you perform?

The kind of equipment that says I should have sky high nitrates

I have a tetra tec filter and that is all. I change cartridges monthly and change water at the same time after vacuuming.

I feed frozen foods twice a day. Have one snail, one shrimp, 3 crabs, 2 scooter blennie and 3 seahorses and a baby urchin that I put in there last weekend.
