Cycling 55 gal with no skimmer?

Here's the situation. I have everything I need for my saltwater setup, except for my skimmer. While I save up and look around, can I set up my tank with sand and live rock? Can I begin cycling? There would be no fish while it's cycling. Is a skimmer crucial for the cycling process as well? Thanks.

yes you can

its funnie because i cycled a garbage can that i was curing live rock and had alot of flow and a heater in it and something happend to the tank and couldnt fix the crack so it the water sat and i threw in some dry rock and a couple months later i was thinking i might have cycled it so i tested the leves and boom all the levels were perfect so i thew in a baby clown to keep the water healthy and now i have a new take i moved the water in and a few days later the levels were perfect
