Deep Sand bed

What are the advantages of using a deep sand bed and what problems does it cause? TIA

My guess is that as far as benefits, more bacteria builds up to help the natural filtration. The down side is that it traps more waste and unwanted nitrates and nitrites. I could be wrong so if I am someone please correct me!

DSB provide an anaerobic environment for bacteria to thrive. This type of benifical bacterial is very effective at consuming NO3. The down side is that toxic pockets of sulfur can also be trapped in the DSB. If released, they can foul water. Keep in mind that a true DSB really needs to be 5-6 inches in depth to be effective and should not be sifted. I prefer a 2 inch sand bed. It will not collect detritus and is nicely sifted by my critters.

2 inches here also. Too much room for trouble on the DSB IMO.
