distance in rock to light

could someone please tell me if there should be a certain distance from the rock and the light or the top of the water
my rock on the top seems to turning brown like but the rock on the bottom layer still has very great colors
and cause it turned brown it's dead?
will it come back

Is it algae? Is it a film? I would say that you might have less circulation up there, if your corraline had too much light it would turn white. Mine has about 4-5 inches of water over it, but it shouldnt affect it even if you have it to the top. In my fuge, I even have some sticking out, but of course the corraline has died off it.

this is a brand new set up 2 maybe 3 weeks
i think that this will happen when it is new but will it be ok down this line
this is what it looks like pic might not be that great but you can get the idea

Actually, based on your pic, looks like there is not enough light to sustain vigorous coralline algae growth. What type and wattage bulbs are you running?

got power-glo (says ideal for marine life, corals, and inverts) 18,000k 20watt
i know i need more light but i have another light hood coming but i didn't know if there should be a certain distance between the light and the rock
