Do bioballs = Nitrate factory?

Hello everyone
I was wondering if bioballs are helpful in your tank. I have a 40 gallon with about 40 lbs. of live rock. I run a skimmer and a trickle filter that has a sponge and a BUNCH of bioballs in it. A guy at the LFS said that bioballs were not necessary and that they are nitrate factories. Is this true?

-2 ocellaris clowns (mated pair)
