Could you successfully keep a DSB with base rock alone? Or would you have to seed with live/buy a critter package?

After you cycle, both rock and sand are 'live'...it doesn't matter if you bought it live, base,macro, purple...it all turns out the same. You just want to make sure it is porous to increase the area for more beneficial bacteria.

I was under the impression that you needed bristle worms and snails to inhabit the DSB to be successful.

Who's to say they are in the rock? There weren't any brittle worms in my live rock. If you want them, you should put them there on purpose.
