IMO I wouldn't think that you'd have a problem with one in a reef tank. So long as his nutrition needs are being met, he shouldn't have to look to your corals to scavenge on. That's what I've noticed by and large with the few emeralds that I've had; if they are being fed right, then they shouldn't mess with corals.
 
I have three in my 72gal reef and one in my 12gal reef. No trouble. they are great crabs and very fun to watch.
 
I have one in my 30 gal reef with many many corals and he just eats my bubble algae, that is what they do best . They love bubble algae so if you have some these guys will eat tons of it. They are also very fun to watch.
