everything refugium

so i want to get a refugium (is that how you spell it?, im bad with spelling). they all seem pritty expensive for a small acryllic boxes, so i decided im going to build my own. i was planing on using the out flow from my cpr bak pak and then just having an overflow go back to my tank. but thats an intirely difrent thread. right now i need to know everything about how they work. is there some articals i should be reading? is a DSB better then a SSB? what kinds of plants are better? what about animals? tell me everything!!!!
