I have an established cleaner shrimp in my tank, and decided to toss another one in yesterday. They were getting along just fine until about 10 minutes ago when I saw the larger one tear the new one in half. Is this common, if not introduced as pairs, the existing one is dominant over the new one?

it would be best to introduce them at the same time what you encountered was territorial war , it's amazing how brutal they can be when protecting there space . I'm sure it wasn't a pretty sight Ive encountered this type of behavior from my trigger very gruesome to say the least ,
sorry bout your loss

Thanks :) that's what I figured. I had 2 at one point and they got along just fine.

Liveaquaria has mated pairs for $$$ hahaha. I'll stick with just one.

I know it's insane what they want for a mated pair , I just ordered a pair of coral banded shrimp, fingers crossed they get along I'm introducing 1 to each end of the tank , I think they will settle on either end but we shall see,
