Hello!

Many are familiar with my various posts and discussions on my bio-ball to LR conversion.

It's underway and progressing well. I cleaned my sump the other day and eliminated two years of mulm as well, etc.

I've realized, too, that my overflow box in this tank has what I think is DLS material wrapped around the standpipe. I remembered this when I found this while perusing Petsolutions.com tonight:

As far as I know, this thing has never been removed and cleaned. Should it be? Should it be replaced? If I clean it, how best do I proceed... rinse in freshwater or swirl it around in my wastewater next time when I do a water change?

My key question, of course is if this is adding to my nitrates and will it help get me closer to zero in my ongoing quest?

Thanks!
- Aaron

You probably do need to clean it. Rinsing it in used water would clean the junk without killing the good bacteria.
