If the fish are happy then they'll stay in the tank. If theyre unhappy and stressed, they will dart all over the place, including upwards. Its up to you if you want to take the risk.

I don't agree here! Yes, it has something to do with stress levels but that can come down to water quality, aggression in the tank but also it being scared for some reason. It might just be afraid of quick movement in front of the tank or your hand inside it...
