First My Frogspawn and Now My Torch!

Yesterday my frogspawn closed up and it went from 2 heads to 4 seperate heads. It looked like the heads split in half. Tonight my torch closed up and looked bad and then did the same exact thing. I thought they grow buds on the sides. Is this normal?
