For those that use mag drive pumps

Do you use the prefilter sponge that comes w/ the pump? it says you should to prevent debris from clogging or messing up the internals. but i dont want to use it cause im afraid it may hinder the performace of the pump. im using a mag 7. Thanks!

Yes. I use it to keep large debris out of my pumps impeller chamber.

If you keep the sponge clean it wont hinder the performance by more than 1-2%.

I don't use mine either. I want pod transfer from the fuge/sump to the tank.

I just use the plastic strainer so large things don't get sucked in...but I have filter pads for mechanical filtration before the water gets to my return pump anyway.

mine didnt come w/ a plastic strainer unless you all are talking about the plastic piece the foam is attached to? i have an overflow box w/ prefilter sponge, so i dont think i need anymore mechanical filtration. im just worried the pump will get screwed up if a big chunk of debris goes in there.
