good morning.
this is an interesting question.

does anyone know if aerobic nitrifying bacteria can be frozen and saved for later?
if i took a biowheel and froze it in a zip lock would the bacteria survive?

I would tend to belive they would all die. Do you have a sump, if so just throw the bio wheel in there when you're not using it to keep all the bacteria alive.

just a hypothetical question. curious if anyone has tested this theory.

maybe if you brought it down to absolute zero like they do when they cryogenically freeze peoples heads! just a thought

Well I know you can not freeze BIO-spira marine, nitrifying bacteria in a bottle. According to the FAQs on their website;

Q: I accidentally froze my BIO-Spira®; will it still work?

A: No. Unfortunately, BIO-Spira® contains living bacteria and freezing for any period of time renders BIO-Spira® innefective.
