ok I have had my tank for 2 yrs now and seems like the glass lids are more of a hassle, how many have glass lids? can I just get rid of them and have the top open under my light?

There's nothing wrong with having an open top. It wouldn't be a bad thing since an open top gives you better oxygen gas exchange. The only issue i could see is with any fish that may jump out of your tank.

I run open tops on almost all my tanks with no ill effects. Liek said, it can help with co2 exchange. :)

Yup. Only real thing you have to watch out is jumpers. Not sure how to best deal with that though. Not sure if window screen mesh would work out? It'll keep the jumpers in, and still allow for gas exchange. I'm just not sure how your tank's light fixture would affect the fiberglass mesh in the long run?
