green algae

my tank has been set up for about 6 months now and im starting to get encrusting green algae all over the glass. I don't mind that but recently it has been growing on the sand. Is there any way to prevent this from growing on the sand?

How old are your light bulbs? Algae will start becoming a problem when your bulbs start to lose their useful spectrum/life. Most bulbs will last 6 to 8 months with some lasting a year. If you are suddenly starting to have to clean your glass every day or two, it's probably the bulbs. If nothing else has changed then that's probably it.

Those bulbs should last a year i would hope how much you have your lights on? How many hours a day? Check for phosphates...are you using RO water?

phosphates are .05 or less hard to tell with the color matching. The acintics are on from 7-8 and the 10,000k is on from 1030 -7? should I cut back on the lighting? I do have corals though so im not sure how much they would like the decreased photo-period.

Is it a hard green algae? It sounds like it might be a variation of coraline to me based on your description.

Yes it is hard green algae. The only way to get it off the glass is to scrape it off.
