The resin changes color as it's exhausted, that's why you need a clear cartridge. X is right, buy a cheap TDS meter off EBay, there is even a inline one.

I don't think DI is needed for fish only, but for a reef I would use it.

I do. A handheld. I have neglected using it and when I did I saw my TDS at like 40-60. I ordered the dual resin from BRS and a TDS inline meter from eBay no more guessing.

The resin will bring you down to zero TDS.
