Halides & Glass

Must halides be away from you glass top cover to keep from cracking it?

When using halides, you really don't want to use a glass cover right on top of the tank. It acts as a heat trap and will likely severely overheat the tank. I would look at running the tank open top or using some of the plastic light grid as a cover. You can get it at Lowes, ect...

But when and if you remove the glass, make sure your bulbs are 8 to 12 inches away from the water.

Appreciate the advice. Do you have a picture of the light grid from Lowes?

Not handy...it's called egg crate and will be located in the section where the fluorescent lights are. It's used in the 4' fixtures that sit in drop ceilings and will usually come in 24" x 48" pieces.

Be careful with the eggcrate when you're using halides...I've heard stories where they've melted.
