If you were building this tank on lets say $25-50 a week, how would you do it? In what order would you suggest getting things? Some stuff I know i'm going to have to save for but I think I am off to a good start having never done saltwater before. What would be your dream stock in a 40b? What substrate would you recommend? Please help!

I will be following your thread as I bought my 40gal breeder tonight.
cant wait see how yours comes out

Highly recommend a 300 watt heater for water changes. Heats up 5-10 gallons in less than 10 mins. I bought mine on eBay for $20.

Spend the $25-30 and get a refractometer. Especially if you are going reef

It measures salinity level in aquariums. It's supposed to be more accurate than a hydrometer. Just ordered one myself.

do I need a refugum tank or a protein skimmer ? or both sorry to hijack your thread.

I bought a canister filter, I guess I dont need that for a reef tank. I can take it back, hopefully I can find a decent HOB protein skimmer.

It is highly recommended that you pick up a skimmer.
