How deep sand bed?

Just curious, how deep should a sand bed be? Is it circumstantial? This would be for a FOWLR. Mine is about 4 inches, is this over kill?

4" is decent. It is not overkill. Some DSB's I've seen average 5-7". Just be careful with DSBs.

I am also curious as i want to add sand to my established tank and didnt know how deep to go

Only issue I know of is you should disturb the sand bed so no stirring as can be toxic to your tank. If you leave it be though will be fine and do good denitrifying job

+1 on 4" DSB always worked for me.... never really been told to be careful about DSB
