how do feather dusters attach to rocks and such?

i just got a pretty big feather duster from my lfs. all is well but i just have him buried in my substrate for now. i see many of pics with them on rocks and stuff i was just wondering if they grow from the rock or if you can attach them to rocks.

They will attach by themselves. Mine has produced some sticky stuff that cements the substrate to the tube. They also seem to be able to position themselves to some degree where they want.
