How do I clean my canister filter?

I am useing the Penn Plex Cascade 700 for a 55 gal FO tank. Ive had it for about 2 months now. I havent done anything to clean it, only replaced the filter media. Can anyone give me advice on a procedure to clean it?Do I use some kind of bio-safe solution, warm water.....etc. How long can my fish survive without the filter running?thanx!

When you do a water change save the water in a tub. take the canister apart and rinse everything in the used sw. The fish can survive a while w/o the filter. Just keep the ph's running
