Reactors aren't really necessary for most people. I simply use a hob filter in my refugium with phosphate removing media in it and that completely takes care of all my excess phosphates.

Diatom blooms however won't be totally cured by removal of phosphate. They are a self limiting type of algae that most newer aquariums encounter. They will usually stick around for a month or two and then go away all on their own.

Well newer people to the hobby sees these expensive pieces of equipment and are led into believing they are necessary and usually waste money on them. Sure the reactors are nice but do we really need to spend a fortune on an array of them?

In fact the only reason I'm running the phosphate media at all is because I recently added acropora and birdsnest to my tank. I also don't run a skimmer.
