How long do MH bulbs last?

How long do MH bulbs last? Is there any way of knowing if they've lost their punch...or do they just die suddenly.

I've got a 175 10K that is just about 1 year old now.

They may look good as new but I've heard they should be changed once per year.

Yes MH bulbs should be changed out yearly. They wont suddenly die unless they are very old but their overall output will be lower than when first installed.

Make sure and keep the old one around, just in case you loose a new one before it's time.

Picking up a cheap MH ballast sounds good...but where are you likely to find that?

You may want to try www.diyreef.com or Darin at www.captivereefs.com I saw a 175w ballast for $77.00 plus you get 6% off from Darin.
