how long do you keep your mh lights on in 24h period?

we just hooked up our mh lighting, and i really have no idea how long they should stay on in a 24h period. We have no moon lights yet. .......Actually, i don't even know how long the reef has sunlight, having been no where tropical in my sad 25 years!

12 hours on and 12 hours off is the default starting point. Depending on your tank and lighting and corals you might want to reduce that to 10hours on and 14 hours off.

I kept mine on 10 hours.
