Is general clear Si adhesive good for gluing acrylic or do I need a special, fish tank glue? TIA

it'll work but its not the best. Find a plastics shop and get some weld on 3. Or weld on 16 if they have it, it's the gooey stuff. What are you tring to glue? If its a big gap silicone may well be your option, although I would rather weld-on a plate over the area affected (example, a big crack)

Don't use it if you need strong bonds. I used it to glue the baffles in my sump for a bubble trap, but I would NEVER use it as the welds for the joints of an acrylic tank.

Weld-on is not glue, it is a SOLVENT, which actually DISSOLVES the acrylic, so that when it reforms, it's actually ONE continuous piece. This is the only way to go for stong bonds.

Putting together a fuge. I've used two part epoxy for many tasks as well. I'll try and find Weld-On. Is this a common Home Depot type product?

I had to mail order mine, as they don't have it at HOme Depot or at the plumbing pace near me. TAP Plastics, I think was the name of the store. They have an online dept. I ordered #4 and #16. (I think those were the numbers). The has to do with the materials to be welded and the viscosity of the solvent - the low numbers are very runny and can only be used for bonding a vertical piece to a horoziontal piece which match perfectly, which is what you'll be doing. This is the best way. I'd still touch it up with the other, thicker solvent (higher number) on the inner edges, though, to guarantee a watertight seal, especially if you cut the acrylic. Let it cure the FULL amount of time recommended on the labe (I think it's 48 hrs).

Good luck...I'll be doing the same later this year when I convert my 90FW to reef.

I'm in the process of building an acrylic sump. Local Home Depot did not carry any of the weld-on. Look in your yellow pages under Plastics and see if you have a local dealer that sells to the public. Check out the website below if you need to order on-line. Weld-on #3 & #4 is like working with water and not to be used for large gaps. #16 is to be used for large gaps.

Check out this website for a good explanation on working with acrylics.

Good luck!
