Is this the same as a Durso Stand Pipe?

Since I bought a AGA reef ready tank, I also purchased their Mega Flow assessory kit.

Does this serve the same purpose as Durso Stand pipes?

yes, that is the same. I use the megaflow on my tank.

BTW - How many inches do you have the water fall from the overflow? I know the shorter the distance of fall, the quieter it would be, but does it have to fall a certain distance?

No it doesnt have to fall any specific distance. I would allow for a few inch drop just so you can monitor if the water overflow is keeping up or falling behind.
