Just what is a sump?

I'm planning to hopefully upgrade my nano 10g reef over into a 55g that I plan to pick up at the next dollar per gallon sale. I currently use a aquaclear 20 for it an it works amazingly. I also use a ro/di filter for all my water that goes in the tank.
Anyway I've wen researching all my equipment for this upgrade but I can't really pin down what a sump really is in the basic form. Like are reactors still needed with ro water. What size skimmer would be the best an what about a refugeium?
