A lawnmower blenny doesn't do anything to the sand except for sit on it occasionally. It actually sounds like one of the many sand sifting gobies you have and they each have their own personalities and some will sit in your hand when you put it in the tank. These are the lawnmower blenny Saltwater Aquarium Fish for Marine Aquariums: Sailfin/Algae Blenny
and this is the goby I think you might have Saltwater Aquarium Fish for Marine Aquariums: Sleeper Green Banded Goby, Valenciennea randalli

Weird. Mine doesn't go near the sand. He just plucks away at the algae all day. Is there algae in your tank? I wonder if he/she is looking for food?

Yep benny will swim up in to the rocks peck around eat then come back down and make a mess with the sand. We also have seaweed for him thats tied around a rock for him to peck out. He loves the garlic infused seaweed. It sits on top of the rock and eats and then rubs all over it.
